How to Give Medicine to Your Child Safely: 5 Tips & Tricks

Writer: Preggy PlusPreggy Plus

If you’ve ever tried giving medicine to a baby, you know the struggle. One minute, you’re measuring the dose, and the next, it’s all over the bib, your hands, and the floor—anywhere but in your baby’s mouth.

So, what’s the best way to ensure your baby gets the right dose without the mess or frustration? Here are five essential tips you can try. 1. Use the Right Tool for the Job

Not all medicine delivery methods are created equal, and what works for one baby may not work for another. The key is to find a tool that makes administering medicine easier while keeping your little one comfortable. The following are 3 options you can use:

- Medicine Syringes: These provide accurate dosing and allow for controlled administration. Gently squirt the medicine into the side of your baby's cheek rather than the back of the throat to reduce the risk of gagging.

- Medicine Dispensers: Some babies resist syringes, but a pacifier-style dispenser can be a great alternative. It mimics the feel of a regular pacifier so your child would be less likely to resist.

- Droppers & Spoons: These methods work well for older infants who are already eating solids and accustomed to swallowing from a spoon. Kids may also find it easier to take medicine from a teacup or a spoon featuring their favorite cartoon character. Just be sure to measure the correct dosage first using a syringe or medicine cup.

If one method doesn't work, don't hesitate to try another until you find what works best. 2. Make it Taste Better (If allowed) Be sure to consult with your child's physician before proceeding with this step. We all know medicine is not the best tasting liquid in the world and babies aren't shy about letting you know it. If the medication allows, you can try mixing it with a small amount of formula or breast milk to mask the taste. For older babies, you can add the medicine to a bit of baby-friendly puree.

Never mix medicine with a full bottle, as your baby might not drink the entire bottle, and you would not know how much medication he/ she swallowed.

3. Keep Baby Calm and Comfortable

A fussy baby makes medicine time harder. Try these tricks:

  • Sing, talk, or use a soothing tone to keep them relaxed.

  • Use a distraction—offer a favorite toy or a gentle back rub.

  • Babies pick up on our emotions, so stay calm and reassuring. Over time, they’ll get used to medicine time.

4. Administer in Small Amounts

Rushing the process can lead to gagging or spitting out the medicine. Instead:

  • Give medicine in small amounts, pausing between each.

  • Aim for the inside of the cheek rather than the back of the throat.

  • Allow baby to swallow before offering more.

Slow and steady wins the race! By choosing the right tools, keeping things calm, and using a few simple tricks, you can make medicine time smoother for both you and your baby.
